Part of it was indeed boredom; I was recently out of college and now working as a young professional with a minimal social life. Other part was loneliness/vanity; realized I wanted a partner who was attractive but those people tend to give their attention to other attractive people, and rightly so. I lost about 50 lbs over the course of a few. Stuck with it since. Put on a fair bit of muscle, worked on social skills some, and validation along the way has been welcome. Eventually snagged a partner which was a good 4.5-ish year run.
