There were several things that mounted to that moment. My father in law needing to lose weight and he's on blood pressure and blood sugar pills; borderline diabetic. I read of what diabetes did to Patrice O'Neal. And I just didn't like looking myself in the mirror.

So back in June, I cut carbs and beer consumption drastically. Started eating better, and drinking lots of water. No sugar drinks, no desserts. (Other than very occasionally. I've had one sugar soda since the first of June.)

I've lost 22 lbs. And I haven't even started an exercise routine yet. That all came off just from changing my eating habits.

My story is kinda funny. I was never massive, but I had a time where I was going out to eat for lunch like every day and put on a bunch of weight. I was around 260, which is pretty big even at 6'4 considering I wasn't muscular, and one day I found myself at KFC ordering one of their $5 Fill-Ups. I opened it up, saw she'd accidentally given me two cookies, and actually thought to myself "bonus cookie!"

The mere thought of "bonus cookie" excitedly dancing through the mind of a grown-ass man caused me to recoil in terror at the monster I had become. I started counting calories that night xfd

That's good! Congrats. That's the way I feel when I get to drink a Guinness or something good like it, and not that low carb awful beer lol

I'd like to lose another 10-15 myself. But the time is now to start getting an exercise routine going to help with that.

Whoops, realized that I didn't even answer my own topic.

For me, I was about 30 or so pounds overweight, which isn't terrible but still I didn't like the way I looked. Especially considering I used to be fit and athletic when I was in my teens, early 20's.

I was hanging out with a few friends from high school back around Halloween 2016 that I hadn't seen in a while. I can't remember how we got on the subject but one of my (female) friends poked my stomach and made a comment along the likes of "OMG I remember in high school you used to have a six pack". For some reason that comment put a spark in me.

The very next day I looked up healthy foods and exercise routines and started working out 4-6 times a week and went from ~185 to 155 in about 4.5 months. I've maintained the weight ever since, fluctuating between 153 and 160, never going over though.

ironically enough, a message board topic like this. Someone was like "omg I'm fat, what do I do?" and everyone was like "it's easy, idiot. Just track caloric intake and start exercising regularly, here are a few links."

https://liamrosen.com/fitness.html
https://exrx.net

Which I then read up on and implemented. Part of it was indeed boredom; I was recently out of college and now working as a young professional with a minimal social life. Other part was loneliness/vanity; realized I wanted a partner who was attractive but those people tend to give their attention to other attractive people, and rightly so.

I lost about 50 lbs over the course of a few. Stuck with it since. Put on a fair bit of muscle, worked on social skills some, and validation along the way has been welcome. Eventually snagged a partner which was a good 4.5-ish year run. It got severed but was unrelated to weight loss :p

My arms were huge and I was loving life with all that extra testosterone in my system.

But I've since a year and a half ago stopped working out and I've gained weight and feel like shit all the time.

I know a guy that said that what sparked it in him was when he was at a pool party, he saw all of the attention that women were giving one of the other guys that was in shape, in comparison to himself who was getting little to no attention. That dude went on to get extremely in shape over the next few years.

I dont think I have ever been overweight, or gained/lost more than a few pounds(outside of obvious shit like weighing more after a growth spurt).

I have become more health concious lately though.

Major cutback on soda and fruit juice(Too much sugar and vitamin C is prevalent in my diet already without it)
Less red meat, more Fish
More water
Eating bannana almost every day
-Trying to eat lower fat/sugar snacks and replace some snacks with things like nuts, high fiber crackers etc.
-Stickiing mostly with regular Cheerios for my breakfest cereal. Plenty of vitamaons, fiber and minerals with little to no sugar, fat, sodium, or other gunk like high fructose corn syrup.
-Less Fast food

The 7 months I was taking care of my grandfather (dad) as he was dying. By myself. The weight loss was not intentional. It just happens. Lose of sleep, forgetting to eat, stress, going into the bathroom and crying into a towel, being accused of not doing enough by family who weren't lifting a finger to help out themselves, etc. Then the months after his death of similar emotional drama. You know, fun times like that. Lost almost 30 pounds during that period.

The first time was my junior year in college. I really let myself go with the drinking and eating out. I was driving one day when I hit a bump in the road. My entire gut jiggled. That's when I knew.

Years later I lost control again, and didn't realize until I put a button up shirt on to go out. I came out of my room feeling good, but my roommate laughed and said "that shirt is looking kinda tight. You're getting a little chubby over there". I've gone to the gym about three times a week and have tracked my calories everyday since.

I started to see that it was easier than I thought to make progress. Losing weight doesnt mean being constantly hungry and sore from exercising. Make small changes to start and when you start seeing the progress, you can make bigger changes like more exercise that you couldnt do before.

I was 27 and at an amusement park. My jeans were sized 42 or 44 or something and I could barely fit into this one roller coaster either the seatbelts part. I was skinny in high school so it motivated me to get the extra weight off I wasnt embarrassed but it was depressing as hell.

I was around 240 to 250 lbs dont remember.

I'm 29 years old now and weight 168 and my waist is size 28.

Intermittent fasting, counting calories and cardio.

Learned the hard way that giving a day or two off is okay and your progress is still fine

I wanted to enlist in the Navy, but I was way too fat. I was 230lbs.

Over the course of a year, I lost over 50lbs. I was at around 177 at my lowest.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to exercise much the past 3 - 4 weeks due to a strained/pulled hamstring. It's annoying because I already see some of the weight creeping back. Instead of the scale reading 177-179, its reading 180-183 lately. Part of it is probably frustration and depression over having my progress stalled and having to request to delay my shipment to boot camp due to the injury. I was suppose to ship out 9/11, but I can't run on a strained hamstring and they take weeks, if not a couple months, to really heal. That comfort food is a sneaky villain.

I can't think of a lot of calorie burning exercises that don't involve use of your legs in some fashion.

Oh, and to lose weight at such a gradual pace didn't require a significant degree of effort. Some moderate cardio exercise at the fitness center and a change in diet. Cut back on the pasta, bread, processed sugars, pork, and beef. Eating mostly chicken breast, tuna, fruit, vegetables, water, and unsweetened tea.

I do have an occasional cheat day.

In 2016 I went from 220 to 175, it took me a year to drop those 45lbs. What did it for me was that I found something in fitness that got me excited again. Right now I got back into it again after a year off, all I do is 10 push ups a day, simple, easy, not killing myself. Im focused more on the magic of exercise now, rather than looking a certain way. I've had a six pack, deadlift Ed 500lbs, did planche push ups etc. Bc of training like a maniac I injured myself bad, so now I'm learning how to heal with exercise.

I had been on some meds that made me gain a bunch of weight by increasing my appetite like crazy. After I got off of them I was overweight for the first time in my life. I didn't really give a shit until I was walking down this hill while hiking and almost twisted my ankle. I realized at that point I had grown topheavy and it was time for a change. That was my tipping point.

Installed myfitnesspal and counted calories, lost 55lbs at around 2lbs a week. I usually weigh myself every month or two now, if I see myself go near 165 I'll start counting again until I'm back to 155lbs.

Lost 70 pounds over time before. That last 20 or so came down to actually running consistently.

If it makes you feel better - once you get to a really healthy weight and start exercising a lot you can eat pretty damn well at times. You burn off way more than pre-dieting/exercising.

Thanks for posting this. That section on mindset is exactly what I try to tell people when they ask how to lose weight. People think of weight loss in a totally warped manner that makes no sense and then it becomes easy to see how people fail at it.
