He's got skills to buff your stats, run as an MP battery, and has a good damage mitigation skill to let you survive thresholds or losing WoL to Snort. All Rikku gets you is an AoE Reraise at the cost of the MP gain and no stat buffs. You absolutely need the ReRaise during the transition, and Phase 1 is easy enough that Ayaka can take two turns applying the reraise.
