It's always a freaking YT video lol

Youtube is really the perfect place for conspiracy videos. A well made video gives the illusion of being legit without actually needing to be legit.

A friend of mine tried to get me to watch this kind of shitgarbage and when I was fucking sober no less. "Wal marts being turned into prison camps!!!!" I'm like "This is blatant fake news bullshit. Don't believe it." He's all "Oh I don't believe it, but it makes you think!" I'm all "it makes me think there is literally no proof in this video that it's even a wal mart. There is no signage. He also said it's in san Diego. Look at the trees. That's not so cal." And he's all "okay FINE but watch this one!" And put on a video by some military dude and he's ranting about occupy whatever so I say "yeah this is making me think all right... about how this video is from fucking 2011, look at the time stamp." I don't get why people entertain horse shit youtube trash fake news videos that make alex jones look like he has the budget to convince the entire USA that he's invented literal time travel...

Every conspiracy theorist I know started out with i dont believe it but it makes you think!

Every one

It's a tactic that is well known among propagandists. They know that even if their creation is easily proven false and is completely unwieldy and unnecessary, that it can still be effective. Once they have the hooks in, they can just keep moving the goal posts. There is this philosophy out there that every lie has a grain of truth (it's not true, honestly), but they use that to their advantage. It usually goes something like this;

"Okay, well clearly Hillary isn't a lizard person, but maybe she's got some secrets"
"Okay, well clearly she doesn't have those kind of secrets, but she's definitely running a pedophile ring"
"Okay, so she's not running a pedophile ring, but she knew about it"
"Okay, she didn't know about it, but that means she doesn't know what is going on around her, so she's a bad leader"
"Okay, maybe none of that happened, but that just means that there is something bigger she is hiding"

It's all about planting seeds. The best part, too, is that social media means that this stuff is like a virus now. Everyone shares the ridiculous pages, laughing at how ridiculous they are and shrugging it off as, 'oh, I just thought it was funny' because it agrees with their philosophy or makes fun of someone they dislike. The people who don't believe it just keep passing it because it's too ridiculous to believe, until it reaches someone who does believe it and, bam, another believer. And the best part? They know that it's considered 'impolite' or 'uncool' to every call someone when they post something that is blatantly false. You'll be called a killjoy, or they'll remind you it's just a joke, and you are somehow an asshole for speaking up.

It's crazy to think about how easy it is to spread disinformation.
