Side note: Surprisingly given how obscure the game is and how relatively minor a character Tiamat is, there is Rule 34. :O Shame it's not very good.

the game's not that obscure at all, it's probably one of the most well known indie games of its genre

Yeah, it's popular among those of us who play indies a lot but I don't think it's quite on the level of the "big" indies, like Cave Story or Super Meat Boy

Hm, I've barely even heard of Cave Story (I recognize the name, that's all). Tried Super Meat Boy but didn't really like it that much.

My absolute fav indie game so far is Spelunky (I tried La-Mulana solely based on repeatedly hearing "if you like Spelunky, try La Mulana"); aside from that I also quite liked Extreme Exorcism, The Swindle and Stealth Inc. Probably several more too, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. (Well, there's Oddworld: New n Tasty which claims to be indie, but I really don't feel it qualifies as such beyond "technically" - it's an amazing game for sure, but it's really pushing the limits of what could be considered "indie".)

You might know Cave Story by its original Japanese name, Doukutsu Monogatari, which literally means "cave story". And yeah I discovered La Mulana the same way, since I freakin' loved Spelunky.

Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty is one of those games that kinda falls in the "AAA indie" category along with stuff like Hellblade and Octodad, in that they're self funded and published, so there's no meddling by a publisher, no focus groups, no BS. They just started with way more money and tech than your average indie dev has.
