I still need to finish the first one. It's fun, though the puzzles get quite "guide dang it!" (or "explore everything and try everything until something works") towards the end which is getting a little bit annoying.

Bump. More people need to be aware of this.

Side note: Surprisingly given how obscure the game is and how relatively minor a character Tiamat is, there is Rule 34. :O Shame it's not very good. (Also, wow, just realised that this is actually the first time in years I looked for rule 34 of something like that - last time was Alisa Bosconovitch back when Tekken 6 was newish. Guess I find her cuter than I realised.)

EDIT: And I just noticed a common factor between those two. Cute non-human humanoids. :/

Yeah, I gave up on trying to do it without a guide shortly after Viy. Though I still try to use one only when I'm really out of ideas (other than "go everywhere, try everything", because I don't have the patience for that).

I still try to figure out (mini)boss strategies by myself. Had to look up tips for Palenque and Baphomet, but beat all the other major bosses and the majority of minibosses without help (or Lamp of Time abuse in the case of minibosses - tried using it against Palenque and quickly found it doesn't work against full-blown bosses).

She was definitely a hard fight (especially since I got myself stuck in hard mode), but I also found it to be a nearly 100% fair fight, unlike Baphomet and Palenque where you're at the mercy of the RNG to a fairly noticable extent. Third phase was definitely the hard point for me; I could get through the first usually without any damage at all, and the second with only a small bit of damage. It's the whole "one screwup and she basically OHKOs you with the hair lasers".

the rotating lasers do like... 200 damage? granted they're pretty telegraphed so you can just dodge them most of the time but if you mess something up a little you just instantly die lol. palenque is a super short fight so you can just dps race and probably win which is good because yeah that fight is garbage

I personally found the second game to be a lot less obtuse about its hints. It's still tricky and still has its fair share of stumpers but overall I feel like it's a lot more clear what's intended to be done next at any given time

200 damage on Hard Mode, I think, not sure about normal mode. Fairy Clothes don't seem to reduce the damage either.

I got pretty good at avoiding the lasers quickly, but I just couldn't survive long enough against her smaller attacks until I realised I can get her with the whip during the laser attack if I move the right way while avoiding it - I had only been throwing flares at her during that.

Yeah, that's how I dealt with Palenque too - completely forgot about any attempts to avoid attacks (aside from destroying the two sub-units at the start, but I didn't bother when they respawned) and just spamming rolling shurikens at him from above.

I'd say Viy and Tiamat are the best boss fights so far (I've beaten all eight guardians, but not any major bosses if any outside of them). Amphisbaena, Ellmac and Sakit weren't bad but weren't particularly notable, and yeah, I've stated my thoughts on Palenque and Baphomet - which now that I think about it more or less hold true for Bahamut too.

Oooh, that's good to hear. :) I did like the balance between "don't be completely obvious" and "don't be ridiculously obscure" in the first half of the game, but eventually it got too much - especially with cases like eg, that statue in the Inferno Cave that's hinted at as being relevant elsewhere, then the hint under it about "swing your weapon left and right" that's actually for somewhere else much later in the game.

Also I dunno if I wanna buy it on PC. I'd like it on something portable tbh, though I don't want to buy a Switch and I'm guessing it won't get a Vita release, so it's either PC or PS4 anyway, in which case may as well go PC so I can get it sooner. :/

Also I kinda feel bad going to the Dimensional Corridor after defeating Tiamat. I looked at her description in the bestiary, "Usually very peaceful, but impossible to calm once angered." Like can't the game give us an option to spare her and maybe get with her once the main quest's finished?

Okay, so Gate of Time is just some weird bonus dungeon that has one item - one of those do-nothing (though probably with some hidden combo effect) software items. I also found a hidden exit to Tower of the Goddess, that doesn't seem to do anything special when you get there.

Also there's one blank entry in my bestiary for Gate of Time that I can't seem to fill. :/

More of CE needs to be aware of Tiamat's cuteness.

I probably should've not spoiler tag'd the title and just avoided spoilers. But I was pretty surprised to find out Tiamat was a cute chick rather than a dragon or something (blame FF8 lol) so that in itself was kinda a spoiler.

A mixture of the first two.

I found most of the mantra tablets myself, but had to look up the general rule for where to use them - I was actually very close, only I was doing from the compass to where you learn the mantra, rather than from the compass to where the boss used to be. I also had missed the "you need to recite one before you can learn the next" detail, which lead me to think I had the location for the second one wrong - but where I had been thinking was actually spot-on.

I personally didn't even realize the maps tessellated the way they do so I was nowhere near solving it. The only thing I noticed was that they're in the back side of the associated area (there's actually a hint for this ingame but it's really badly translated to the point of being useless) and I basically just wandered around spamming them in every room until they activated and I went to get the next one

The manual mentions the 4x5 grid thing, and I had figured out the possibility of wraparound before I even fought Amphisbaena - mostly from that puzzle in Gate of Guidance that uses it. But I like how they re-used the tesselation in a few later areas (eg. Chamber of Extinction, Gate of Illusion) to remind the player of it. :)

Just realised I didn't actually post my thoughts on the final boss fight.

So... I'd say it's one of the more fair ones, apart from the third phase. The whole mock-3D thing just doesn't work well here, it's hard to tell exactly when the 3D attacks (in this case the lightning bolts) are able to hit you, meaning you pretty much just have to avoid their area altogether. And is it just me, or is the baby's laser literally impossible to avoid or block, aside from by abusing caltrops for temp-invincibility? It also felt like flares were literally the only way to damage that phase - though IDK, maybe the axe can reach? I don't bother with the axe because the flail whip is stronger and faster. But aside from that phase, it was actually a really good final boss.

Now on the other hand, immediately after the fight... seriously, you're meant to just figure out that that hanging string is a ladder? I wasted 4 minutes the first time, looking for another way because I didn't spot that. I discovered that you're actually meant to go to Mulbrook completely by accident; after finding the normal way out blocked, I looked around, accidentally ended up in that room, and noticed the door wasn't blocked like all the others - had it not been for that this would certianly have been a "guide dang it!" moment for me; with my actual strategy being to try and find another way to the Surface, like Masoleum Of The Giants -> Graveyard Of The Giants -> Tower Of The Goddess -> Surface. I might try that after I complete Hell and see if that even works.

I tried many times and couldn't get a single hit from the whip. I did on one run manage the second form using only the whip without taking any damage, but no matter what I tried I couldn't repeat that again and started using shurikens instead - until I realised the spinny disk thing (I keep forgetting the name) is far quicker.

I mostly used the whip in the first and fifth forms (early stages anyway; switched to other weapons in the later stages), as well as the tentacles (but not the main target) in the 4th. I used the spinny disk thing for the second, flares for the third, and bombs for the fourth.

In general, I didn't find the main weapons other than the whip to be very useful. I used the knife a few times for those small green lizards in Twin Labyrinths and for breakables that were underneath me, but that's pretty much it.

You might know Cave Story by its original Japanese name, Doukutsu Monogatari, which literally means "cave story". And yeah I discovered La Mulana the same way, since I freakin' loved Spelunky.

Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty is one of those games that kinda falls in the "AAA indie" category along with stuff like Hellblade and Octodad, in that they're self funded and published, so there's no meddling by a publisher, no focus groups, no BS. They just started with way more money and tech than your average indie dev has.

You might know Cave Story by its original Japanese name, Doukutsu Monogatari, which literally means "cave story". And yeah I discovered La Mulana the same way, since I freakin' loved Spelunky.

Nope, don't know it by that name either.

cave story is probably the single game I would consider most responsible for indie games being a thing at all. And yeah it's pretty fun too, not just a neat piece of history, strongly recommend

I'm probably gonna get La-Mulana 2 and start playing over the weekend (depending how quickly I complete Hell Temple).

Might even Let's Play it. I'll think about it. (Can't livestream, connection isn't good enough.)

I've gotten up to the part of Hell Temple where you have to wall jump between spikes.

That horse enemy can get fucked up the ass with a pineapple. Even if I wait until it fires before jumping, it seems to fire again almost immediately. Short of abusing the Lamp of Time (which I'm gonna do once I go back and try again) that room's literally a matter of luck. >_>

Up to this point, there's been a couple of rooms in Hell Temple I had to look up, but the majority of them I solved by myself.

Should just go get my bae Tiamat to come and blast the place to smithereens with her lasers. Oh wait, that's right, I killed her. T_T
