The Man They Could Not Hang may not be that well-known in the mainstream Karloff canon but to horror aficionados it's a very enjoyable part of it with a few neat trivia facts to its name to really cement its horror legacy. It is the first of three films with similar plots all starring Karloff and each directed by Nick Grinde, lightly based on the story of John "Babbacombe" Lee who survived three separate hanging attempts. In the film, Karloff portrays a mad scientist obsessed with resurrection (sound familiar?) but is hung when his assistant's girlfriend finds out about his twisted experiments. Karloff vows revenge on everyone who sentenced him and is brought back to life using his experiment and Karloff executes his murder plot. The plot is simple, but the real draw here anyway is Karloff's performance. One very interesting thing about this film is that Karloff builds a machine very similar to the basis for open-heart surgery, as a science-fiction concept became reality. At only an hour, it's sure worth a watch for yet another great Karloff performance.
