Firewire is better than USB if you're tracking 16 tracks at once from a Reel 2 Reel which is what I do. Linux drivers allow a direct link for some reason which cuts back on latency between the tracks. On Windows I can do the same tracking with firewire, but there are variances in each of the tracks which makes them unusable. USB is like 800 dollars if you want a device that can accomplish the same that a 200 dollar firewire mixing board can do. Any of those lame focusrite boxes can only do stereo before burning a hole in your desk. --- There sure are a lot of different mes just like you have a lot of different yous!
