Ubuntu 18.10

I just installed it. It's really fast and looks a lot nicer than the previous versions. I am very impressed. It's all free too.

I don't believe you because Ubuntu has been becoming more and more garbage since 16. Updater doesn't work, software center stopped working, they refused to improve unity and instead said eh fuck let's just go back to gnome, etc. Still doesn't come with a good terminal or file browser.

I haven't used the desktop version of 18.x yet but the 18.04 LTS server is pretty speedy too.

I haven't messed around with Linux in years. The new icon theme looks great, though.

only thing that really bothers me looking at it is the amount of space the dock (left) takes up, can you auto hide it?

This was the best decision they've made in years, honestly. It's already starting to benefit Ubuntu and all the extra manpower is already benefiting Gnome.

Yes. And you can shrink it and move it to the bottom it you prefer it that way.

I haven't used Ubuntu for a few years now. I have Mint 19 (based on Ubuntu 18.04 I think) Cinnamon dual-booted currently, which I'm fairly happy with.

If it makes a better end product eventually maybe. I can't say I was ever a big fan of Unity, but I liked the search and the Gnome interface didn't have that. Either way Cinnamon is better. But the main thing for me is that I gave it at least a year and I wasn't seeing anything gnome working on Ubuntu, so I'm not convinced the extra manpower you are talking about is really doing all that much for gnome.

I really don't feel like Ubuntu has very seamless support for custom UI.

ALTHOUGH. I am using Mint and the factory Nvidia driver doesn't seem to support sound over HDMI, and the custom "third-party" one makes Mint crash really bad. I'm guessing this problem doesn't exist in Ubuntu.

I haven't had those issues specifically, but I have an Nvidia Optimus card on here, which is usually a major pain on Linux. Even with nvidia-prime and the integrated graphics selected, my laptop was heating up with no applications running. However, with Mint 19 and the nvidia-390 drivers, I managed to install Bumblebee with no issues. Things seem to be fine now.

I'd like to switch, but anything other than Windows still doesn't have widespread-enough support (except arguably Mac, but I don't want to switch to that with how much Macs cost).

Other OSes are fine for my secondary machines, but my primary one is Windows for the forseeable future.

Well it depends what you use it for. If you're gaming definitely not. There are also some specific industry specific tools that are going to be unavailable under UNIX based systems. In college though I went 4 years using Linux almost entirely, its superior for programming and has some comparable tools in regard to GIMP/Photoshop, and anything web design. Not sure if AutoCAD is on Linux. A lot of software like that has been ported over in the last 10 years, Linux makes a good work environment.

It's definitely getting close, I'll admit that. And gaming isn't a huge concern - my gf has a dedicated gaming PC so I could just use that; and personally I prefer console anyway.

I like Ubuntu but use an arch linux build right now. Most people wouldn't know this, but it's the best OS imo for audio tracking/recording. Much lower latency compared to windows if you're using firewire gear

It is, but its lower quality than some alternatives that are easily available. Not sure why you'd want to use it. Its also proprietary as hell.

Firewire is better than USB if you're tracking 16 tracks at once from a Reel 2 Reel which is what I do. Linux drivers allow a direct link for some reason which cuts back on latency between the tracks.

On Windows I can do the same tracking with firewire, but there are variances in each of the tracks which makes them unusable.

USB is like 800 dollars if you want a device that can accomplish the same that a 200 dollar firewire mixing board can do. Any of those lame focusrite boxes can only do stereo before burning a hole in your desk.
