I think it's more the fact that we have a long, long history. Yours is much shorter, so events like that seem more important to you. Weren't we the first colony of theirs that won our independence? The Thirteen Colonies were some of the earliest to be established and at the time they became independent, the British Empire was far, far smaller than it would be 150 years later.
