Most Brits these days probably aren't even able to pinpoint the significance of that year; and if you explained it to them, they'd just shrug and say, "Oh, right." We "carry a grudge" about it about as much as we carry a grudge over the return of Hong Kong to China. We're more likely to feel guilty for sending you Piers Morgan and James Corden. :-(

Yeah, to Brits, the Revolutionary War isn't nearly as significant to them as it is to us Americans. I mean unless they're history buffs, it's possible they might not even know what it was.

It's just another event in their history from 300 years ago, but to us, it's the start of our country and a huge thing.

It gets mentioned in Key Stage 3 History textbooks, but it's about as significant to our national history as April 18, 1980 when Zimbabwe became independent. Consequently it gets relegated to the back of the bottom drawer of memory, except maybe during the occasional pub trivia quiz.

The story of how the British used to own the country that is now one of if not the biggest super power in the world barely gets mentioned in history?

I get that you think that everybody wants to be American. Here's the thing though, they don't. Yes, the US is a big, important country but there's a big wide world out there.

I see why it's important to you. It's part of your identity as a country, your very foundation. To us it obviously means a lot less.

I don't think everyone wants to be an American. I think most people want to be whoever they actually are. I don't know where you get that.

It's just I find it hard to believe that there's hardly a passing mention of the revolutionary war in history class. It doesn't have to be long or a major part, but come on..."oh by the way we fought a war against America, but there's really nothing important or interesting about that". That's pretty odd. It should be as relevant in British history as the Korean War is to American history.

Why should it be important?

America is far from the only only place that rebelled and/or Britain gave up on. And even at the time, was far more important things occurring at our doorstep that had greater impact.

The Thirteen Colonies were some of the earliest to be established and at the time they became independent, the British Empire was far, far smaller than it would be 150 years later. It wasn't the beginning of the end for the Empire -- it was the end of the beginning.

It wasn't even the biggest war Britain was fighting at the time, historically isn't very interesting and was long before the height of the empire so it'snot of particular significance considering how many colonies Britain actually had. As for America becoming powerful, that actually does get studied in detail as America 1930-1990 is major part of the history syllabus studied by 15/16 year olds.
