The first time the game even mentioned that Ravennue village existed, the quest that required me to go to Ravennue and talk to the elder to activate it had already expired. That's just bad design!

There's a reason for that. By the time the plot makes you go there, Agate has been through there and did it. I mean, you're not the only bracer! You also were free to head to Ravennue on your own before the game made you for the main story. It's the game's way of occasionally rewarding you for exploring and taking your own initiative.

(Also, if you are trying to literally claim the game never said that, you could have checked the road signs. Even inside the city it almost certainly mentioned it. And I highly doubt it isn't mentioned in NPC chatter. Main story, probably, but again, yeah.)

If a quest duration is short it basically means it will expire the next time the plot advances. If it's medium you can probably advance it but you better be careful. If it's long you can probably not worry for a while.
