It depends no the lore, but in most cases zombies do not ever starve, they can break down, it's easier to smash their skulls etc, and over time they can lose parts etc.

In WD world the zombies have not changed much honestly since the start. In any kind of reality, corpses with no circulatory system or way to regenerate cells would start to break down fairly quickly.

Muscles are still needed for zombies to work when magic is not around, but....muscles would not keep working long term. Skeletons make no sense at all obviously in a scientific world (you need muscles to make the bones move).

So it's already kinda walking a thin line when you deal with zombies, but don't involve magic. You could.....kind of....explain zombies moving around etc for a few months or maybe...maybe even a year, especially if they were technically alive still, just infected.

Years later? Nope, all zombies would pretty much be mush, and the brains (which seem to be their weak spot) would naturally decompose/break down...auto killing them. A zombie apocalypse in WD world would mostly end within a year, with only stragglers from people who died more recently (a very, very small number of them).
