Red Dead Redemption was good but it kinda did the Cowboy sandbox thing.

And when people ask what Red Dead Redemption 2 does differently the response seems to be "Well you can't carry as many weapons and have to constantly go back to your horse to load items and pelts. Also you smell and get dirty/hungry/tired a lot and have to go back home to sleep and have baths all the time inbetween the actual fun gamplay."

And to me that just sounds worse. Just sounds like they inserted pointless timewasting into the game. I don't get why RDR1 is retroactively considered worse because it respected the audience enough to take it for granted that John washed his face now and then off camera.

We accept that video games character shave and bathe and eat and shit.

I mean you can piss in Sleeping Dogs but they don't have a "You need a piss" mechanic where if you don't piss the bar slowly rises and if it gets too full you move funny and can't fight as well, and then eventually pee yourself.

I mean Fry Cry 2 did that thing where every now and then you had to stop whatever the fuck you were doing and go and get some pills and everyone rightly hated it so much that they not only took it out but actually made fun of it in the next game. This on paper seems to be the same thing.

What is it that I am not seeing that hooked ya to the thing?
