Red Dead Redemption was good but it kinda did the Cowboy sandbox thing.

And when people ask what Red Dead Redemption 2 does differently the response seems to be "Well you can't carry as many weapons and have to constantly go back to your horse to load items and pelts. Also you smell and get dirty/hungry/tired a lot and have to go back home to sleep and have baths all the time inbetween the actual fun gamplay."

And to me that just sounds worse. Just sounds like they inserted pointless timewasting into the game. I don't get why RDR1 is retroactively considered worse because it respected the audience enough to take it for granted that John washed his face now and then off camera.

We accept that video games character shave and bathe and eat and shit.

I mean you can piss in Sleeping Dogs but they don't have a "You need a piss" mechanic where if you don't piss the bar slowly rises and if it gets too full you move funny and can't fight as well, and then eventually pee yourself.

I mean Fry Cry 2 did that thing where every now and then you had to stop whatever the fuck you were doing and go and get some pills and everyone rightly hated it so much that they not only took it out but actually made fun of it in the next game. This on paper seems to be the same thing.

What is it that I am not seeing that hooked ya to the thing?

This sounds like a cop out to me.

Immersion and time-wasting aren't synonymous and "You're dirty you need to go wash" isn't really that immersive when you can at the same time tank 2 bullets then kill 16 people, steal a train, walk back and pay your bounty as if nothing happened.

I mean for example seeing a character's condensation when they breathe in the cold is immersive. A meter saying "You are this cold, you must stop having fun and go back to the fire for a while to not be this cold." is kinda unimmersive. it's just screaming that this is a video game.

Sell me on how time-wasting immerses you into a cowboy sandbox that makes it superior to an already immersive cowboy sandbox with no time-wasting?

Going back to Fry Cry 2 I remember asking people the same thing on how some of them liked it more than 3 and it boiled down to "Wasting your time is better because it is!"

its not nearly as intrusive as you or other people are trying to make it sound. you can play the whole game without taking a bath if you want, your character will just get visibly dirty and the other characters will complain that you smell like shit. ive been playing since release and have only bathed like 4 or 5 times.

eating food is what gives you health and stamina, and really you only need to do it once a day, but still you can just ignore and take the hit to your stamina.

to me, this game is just an incredibly in-depth and immersive cowboy sim.

but the bathing, eating, etc is not annoying or in the way of the experience at all if you ask me. i like it *shrug*.

the legitimate complain to make about this game would be the controls being kinda clunky and wonky, but you get used to them and i learned to really appreciate them.

You don't have to bathe at all. Also, instead of a bath, walking in water for a second has the same result.

You never HAVE TO shave. You dont even HAVE TO change your clothes, you'll just be at a slight disadvantage if youre in the cold with no coat.

You don't HAVE TO sleep. It's just a good quick way to regen your health/stam. Notice I said quick. It takes like, 15 second to set up a camp and sleep.

No, you cannot store guns up your asshole, and I am okay with it. Remember to get them from your horse and there's no problem. If you dont come prepared, that's on you.

The only complaints I really have is that the weappn/item wheel is a bit tedious to work through, and that without fast travel, there is a lot of time wasted just galloping from one spot to another. Although in doing so, I almost always get caught up doing something else in between, so it's not totally dead/wasted time.

The game surely isn't for everyone, especially in today's ADHD Call Of Duty "GAME STARTED SHOOT EVERYTHING NOW OMG I NEED TO BE ACROSS THE MAP NOW" culture.

I'm loving it though.

Added realism is only good when it's also added fun.

I'd imagine letsplays are a great way for someone to keep through backlog from growing too much.

I don't watch other people play games unless they're setting a record or something awesome.

I couldn't care less if you play it or not. It sounds like you already have your mind made up. Despite whatever made up qualms you may have with it, it's a phenomenal game.

Yeah this is accurate

The only real annoyance is how I'll have two guns on me, and then I get on the horse and he automatically unequips them and puts them back on the horse, so a lot of the time when I get back off the horse, I forget he took the guns off and I'm walking around with just sidearms.

On-topic: It's a good game, the realism is nice and the "forced tedium" is overblown like Jim said, but speaking as someone who never even played RDR1, I'm having a blast. As he said, you may not like it, but it's just a beautifully created game.

Does RDR2 ever come close to that moment in RDR1 where you ride into Mexico and the music starts playing

Some of the immersive elements are cool. A lot of them are monotonous. Not being able to carry all of your weapons, even worse having them auto unequip, is annoying. The weight mechanic is stupid. The bounty system is broken. And the honor system is unnecessary.

Other than that, the game is phenomenal.

I just thought it was funny how they discussed it at all. Just goes to show that it's getting a lot of attention for being so deep and detailed.

Im happy to see people who have actually played the game are correcting the ones who probably havent saying the immersion stuff is cumbersome, because it isnt at all and has been blown way out of proportion.

You don't have to shave, you dont have to bathe and if you want to just walking through water is enough. You dont have to brush your horse, or cook, or chop wood (see post # 26) or comb your hair. And while it's true your horse stores your weapons, by default you will always keep your pistols on you so it's no big deal if you forget during a mission.

Its a great game and will change the way other Developers will create they're open world games moving forward.
