30 year olds are still a bit rare, mainly due to the cost of living spike in the last 5 years or so. It wasn't super rare 12 years ago for 18-20 year olds to continue living with their parents, but it also was significantly cheaper for them to move out at that point.

Even in the last few years the cost of 1 bedrooms have skyrocketed. In fact, a place in Olympia that used to be 800$ is now 1285$ a month!! that is over a 50% increase in 3 years, and that is just one example.

At this point unless a teen graduates with a solid job paying over $20 an hour (which doesn't happen often) they either have to live with their parents, or roomates (and obviously the parent situation can often be far cheaper, and less stressful (depending on the roomates of course).

12 years ago on the other hand, you could rent a small 1 bedroom for $500-$600 most places and pay for that even working at a fast food place or any min wage job. So yeah, it was a choice back then, and many current 30 year olds decided to move out, only a few probably never did until now....when it doesn't make any sense at all anymore.
