It's probably not an exageration to say most modern western music was built on his shoulders whether intentional or not.

I'd say that's a massive exaggeration. He's amongst the most technically skilled guitarists of all time and he innovated lots of guitar tricks like controlling feedback and stereo phasing, but in terms of actual writing music he was just playing variations on existing blues rock for the most part.
