One other factoid I forgot to mention in my last post - of the 10 wealthiest US states by median income, all but two are strongly Democratic (in order: Maryland, New Jersey, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Alaska, California, Virginia, and Washington). The exceptions are republican Alaska (most of which comes from a combination of a small population and the presence of large amounts of easily accessible oil) and swing-state New Hampshire.

By contrast, the 10 poorest states are (with just one exception in blue New Mexico) all strongly Republican: West Virginia, Mississippi, Arkansas, New Mexico, Lousiana, Alabama, Kentucky, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

Hence why I added the qualifier of "Democratic Socialist" in there as well. Honestly, there aren't many true socialist countries anymore - China (with a huge asterisk, as it's moved decidedly more towards a free-market economy in the last 10-20 years), Cuba, and Vietnam are pretty much the only ones I can think of and the problems with those countries reach far beyond what level of capitalism they allow within their borders.

That said, the countries I named are the most socialistic in Europe and the ones a certain brand of conservatives shriek in horror about when they start rambling about the "evils of socialism". These are the same people who thought Obama was a socialist - if you go by that metric, these countries (along with virtually every other democratic nation on the planet) are hardcore socialist.
