It's not that unbelievable if you actually see this shit in action. I had a friend fall down the alt-right sink hole, and it basically was:

1. Haha these extremist SJWs and extremist feminists are ridiculous. This chick wants to castrate all men, holy shit lol.
2. Hey check out these offensive edgy memes.
3. Hey, check out these youtubers who totally meme on SJWs, lol
4. Hey, these youtubers are making a lot of sense when it comes to anti-feminism/anti-transgenderism/immigrants
5. Hey these alt-righters make some good points about White Nationalism and how important it was in America's progression to a world power.

Took about a year. I don't know why anyone would think that's ridiculous, these kind of progressions are natural in any propaganda effort, and the actors involved don't even need to be cognizant of the fact that they are part of a chain of radicalization for it to be effective (Especially in this digital age of media). Places like Youtube literally will spoon feed the content to people who are susceptible to it, not because they have a political agenda, but because that is just how the algorithm works--If you liked a meme video, it will try to give you other videos like it. 5 of those videos might be other meme videos, and the 6th might be a slightly alt-right video. If you watch and like that, your next 6 video recommendations might be lite-right and one white supremacist video.

If this kind of system WASN'T producing ideological pipelines I'd actually he shocked. The problem is how effective the alt-right pipeline is because:

1. Youtube is a platform primarily viewed by kids and teenagers
2. Kids are extremely susceptible to manipulative or shallow arguments.
3. Kids are always testing their boundaries and thus drawn to controversial humor and ideas.

Dump a bunch of alt-right talking heads who are very self-assured and controversial and BOOM! Alt-right membership goes up.
