It's actually an interesting concept, if VR directly communicates to your brain, you could in theory send signals/messages to the brain based on having a different body/shape (or gender), so a person could experience exactly what it was like to be a girl (or an octupus for that matter).

It would require basically breaking the code that the nervous system uses to send signals to the brain, but it certainly would be possible, even within our lifetimes:)

Here is the real problem though, if it was, and you had a virtual body you much prefered (and if you can basically make any body you want, most virtual bodies would probably be far surperior), would you even spend time in your physical body at all? Would people all turn into blobs, fed by machines etc, while they exist primarily in a virtual world....basically creating our own matrix?
