It certainly didn't become mainstream until the late 1990s. I knew it existed before couldnt tell you the year though. But it started out as a military thing iirc. I remember having a computer well before I even knew about the internet though. Thing didnt even have Windows. Just MS DOS but my grandad made his own OS for it.
