Monsters who commit these atrocities are often victims themselves through genetics, environment, upbringing, etc. They did terrible things and should be punished and locked away, but I've never really agreed with the death penalty for that reason. They were basically born and through a series of butterfly effects, were unable to not become that monster. I don't think they should be legally killed for that reason. Plus the whole "citizens getting killed by their government" always seems questionable. Do a crime, and lose the privilege to live freely is fair in my book.

Basically. Plus there's always the issue that the person may actually be innocent and, while the country can deprive somebody of their life in punishment, it can't restore that life should exonerating evidence emerge (although, in this case, that evidence is pretty exceedingly unlikely).

Not to mention that the dude is 67. He could run the clock out on appeals as is, wasting the government's time and money.
