You might think that gold would fill this role properly, but it is pretty and unique, definitely distinct from other metals. Titanium isn't much stronger than steel IIRC, but it is lighter, so it can be said it deserves at least some of its glory. Copper isn't a fabulous conductor, but it is common, so its omnipresence is well explained. Platinum has an unremarkable color, is less conductive than other common metals, isn't notably strong, etc. It's pretty stable, sure, and easy to work with, so it definitely has its uses. I'll admit that its catalytic properties are cool. However, its only real claim to fame is in its rarity.
