Tungsten A pretty weird metal. It's in that heavy transition region with metals like osmium and iridium, so it's heavy as well as pretty underappreciated. I don't think most people know its alternative name Wolfram, but without that cool name I'm not sure why it has the popular presence that it does. I don't think it's overhyped like titanium is, just more well known. Its notable physical and chemical features are too dry to be very interesting, save for its insane melting point. It doesn't melt until like 3000C/6000F which is incredible. It also poses the unique issue that we can't really play around with its liquid form much. It faces the same issue as the universal solvent: what do you hold it in? I think I'm a little biased against it because I think osmium and iridium are much cooler, but I have to give it respect for its absurd dedication to remaining solid UF8 posted... https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/community/MetalmindStats doesnt like rice metal Mr Lasastryke posted...

Copper is the basic bitch of conductors. If it weren't so common and ductile, nobody would use it. I'm tired of its stupid orange color and its goddamn ubiquity. Monolayer iron germanium telluride (Fe3GeTe2) Fire, water, air, dirt, fucking magnets, how do they work? Ferromagnetism is a very cool phenomenon, though hysteresis is a little frightening to me, can't wait to do that in my lab. I *might* go down a condensed matter route for grad school, so terms like "high carrier mobility" and "rectangular hysteresis loops" and "Curie temperature", which I understand in principle but don't necessarily get, will likely become increasingly relevant to me. I might end up working with this or something very similar. Platinum Platinum is the epitome of an overrated metal. You might think that gold would fill this role properly, but it is pretty and unique, definitely distinct from other metals. Titanium isn't much stronger than steel IIRC, but it is lighter, so it can be said it deserves at least some of its glory. Copper isn't a fabulous conductor, but it is common, so its omnipresence is well explained. Platinum has an unremarkable color, is less conductive than other common metals, isn't notably strong, etc. It's pretty stable, sure, and easy to work with, so it definitely has its uses. I'll admit that its catalytic properties are cool. However, its only real claim to fame is in its rarity. It's completely vapid. getting plats can be fun in some circumstances Actually relevant Atium Monolayer iron germanium telluride (Fe3GeTe2) Tungsten Copper Platinum Wrong metal Copper Wasp Harmony Square Station (Combat) into the Mouths of Hell we March Desert Girl Convergence Metalmindstats --- Video Game Music Contest 14 winner: Terraria Calamity - Scourge of the Universe ... On The Virg - Native Metal the beginning made me uncomfortable Shaduln posted... Mercury This doesn't even need a writeup redrocket posted... Hafnium There's a very famous allegory told by Milton Friedman about how no one person can really grasp the complexities of international relationships and trades that go on all of the time to make something so simple as a pencil. Metallurgy and material science is kind of like that to me in a more fundamental manner. Sure, you can broadly predict the behavior of different compounds theoretically, but so many weird, unpredicted results are everywhere for everything. I had a school iPad a few years ago with an app of an interactive periodic table. It only gave short blurbs for each element, yet I loved it because it described uses and properties of elements I barely remember exist. So, I was expecting hafnium to be a typical transition element that's not really special besides being weirdly good at making yellow dyes and happens to have widespread use in a specific type of nail galvanization... and it pretty much is, just with nuclear stuff. It has a high nuclear cross-section so it sees some use in nuclear control rods, and has a metastable excited nuclear state with very high energies, around 2.5 MeV which is like 5 electron mass's worth of energy. Those photons could create electron-positron pairs. Neat! DARPA also once tried to weaponize this. Hafnium has about the same radius, electronegativity and first few ionization energies of zirconium, despite being 32 atomic numbers above it. The 4f electrons apparently provide poor nuclear shielding, presumably because of their wacky-ass orbits, and the atoms end up looking similar taking this into account. I knew effects vaguely like this existed, but not this one specifically. So hafnium itself isn't that cool. I'll give it points for how arcane some of its properties are and for it being a learning experience for me. handsomeboy2012 posted... Tin I mean, it's tin. It's aight. You can solder and shit with it. it's one of those wacky elements that retain Latin abbreviations for its symbol, like mercury above. Tin is stannum, and mercury is like hydrargentum or some shit. Hydrargyrum, apparently. A great deal of history, which hardly needs to be mentioned. Encouraged significant advances in physics, and chemistry in general, not just radio- or industrial. Dense as hell, so it can ironically be used as shielding in some situations, or, perhaps regretfully, in ammunition.
