It might also be because a ton of US citizens have some kind of debt. Whether it be from student loans, medical expenses, credit cards, etc.

That's true. Especially those students loans. Nobody can save with all those debts...

That's true, too. Maybe some put all their extra money into those instead of their bank accounts...
