He's definitely changed a lot over the years, and intentionally evolved his show away from the whole "shock jock" thing and lost some of his edge as a result

For a while he was using Artie as his conduit for edginess, so he could play it safe and schmooze the A-listers to build the show up. With Artie gone and no one to fill the Jackie chair the show has lost most of its teeth, and I can see where older fans would be nostalgic for "classic Stern", but I still enjoy the show. It's just for different reasons than I used to.

Another interesting development over the years has been the rise in podcasting. If "old school Stern" was someone's thing, there's likely to be a dozen podcasts out there that will sate them. And I think Stern recognizes that and realizes, for better or worse, that he can't please everyone so he might as well make the show he wants, critics and scorned fans be damned
