Conceptually, it's not unreasonable. You end up with a result that's not necessarily everyone's first choice, but is at least most people's second or third choice, which aligns well with the fundamental idea of democracy (that is, a government that reflects what the majority wants). It runs into problems, though, when you have relatively few choices (I think we've got a grand total of 7 now if we count the bloc and the communist party), especially when 2-3 of those choices are consistently expected to be at least second-favourite for most people. It's better with larger ballots and more evenly-matched candidates.
