Can anyone explain this weird mystique around Homestuck to me? Like, why are the reactions in this topic, well, the way they are?

Yes, I'm totally out of the loop.

It was a serialized story for years that people grew quite attached to. I think it's great and unlike anything else anyone's ever written, but I don't think I could recommend it to everyone; it's long, nearly incomprehensible, and requires a strong tolerance for semi-philosophical nonsense. I'd recommend it to exactly the kind of person who enjoys both Undertale (similar penchances for memorable characters, deep world lore, and irreverent humor; Toby Fox connection; if you could ignore Undertale's fandom you can also ignore Homestuck's) and the Zero Escape trilogy (if you can understand VLR, that's a step towards deciphering Homestuck) but not anyone else.

The fandom's not even really bad enough to earn their reputation. They're big, they really, really like the thing to an obsessive degree, and since it's the internet, they're 90% awful, but this is going to go for anything that's big enough to be visible. I don't know why people let this impact their enjoyment of the thing, it's not really relevant to the work unless you make it. Like, yeah no shit Homestuck's a good read when you're just taking it for what it is, haha.
