Okay so:

It's an official sequel with a story by Andrew Hussie but written by fans and previous contributors (led by a SCP writer). It is following on from the epilogues which I'm not crazy about, but it sounds like they might be about to disregard a lot of that and do some wild stuff. One update, and a "bonus update" per month, also there is a Patreon. And most importantly, the command suggestion box is back.

So I started reading Homestuck again.

Man, when you divorce the overzealous fandom, troubled game development and unsatisfying epilogues of dubious canonicity from the story itself, this is a good-ass read. I forgot how good it was because the BS that surrounded it but it's really great.

It is a shame that the switch to HTML5 resulted in some animations lagging on mobile though.

Yes, I'm totally out of the loop.

It was a serialized story for years that people grew quite attached to. I think it's great and unlike anything else anyone's ever written, but I don't think I could recommend it to everyone; it's long, nearly incomprehensible, and requires a strong tolerance for semi-philosophical nonsense. I'd recommend it to exactly the kind of person who enjoys both Undertale (similar penchances for memorable characters, deep world lore, and irreverent humor; Toby Fox connection; if you could ignore Undertale's fandom you can also ignore Homestuck's) and the Zero Escape trilogy (if you can understand VLR, that's a step towards deciphering Homestuck) but not anyone else.

The fandom's not even really bad enough to earn their reputation. They're big, they really, really like the thing to an obsessive degree, and since it's the internet, they're 90% awful, but this is going to go for anything that's big enough to be visible. I don't know why people let this impact their enjoyment of the thing, it's not really relevant to the work unless you make it. Like, yeah no shit Homestuck's a good read when you're just taking it for what it is, haha.

It's been going extremely slow since the buyout. But it is in development.

It might be even slower than I thought since they put out Pesterquest (which I think is a Friendsim but with the actual Homestuck characters) and now this.

This is the thing about Homestuck after the ending (or more specifically after the credits): none of it has ever been put as a part of it on the main site, and while it is officially sanctioned the word "canon" has never been used. Thus Homestuck can easily rest as the complete work ending at the credits, nothing afterwards needs to matter at all. And that's a pretty stonking work.

Rolycoly posted...

There are two parts to it:

First Homestuck itself, which you can now find at https://www.homestuck.com. It is kind of a webcomic, but really a massively sprawling multimedia story involving comic panels, gifs, text logs and prose, animations, minigames and more. Also early on it was getting a lot of input in the direction of the story from readers, first via a direct suggestion box, then from posts on the sadly now delet forums. It is a story unlike anything else (and frankly, it's pretty awesome) anywhere really. Also Toby Fox did a lot of the music and basically came up through there.

Then there is the stuff surrounding Honestuck, which is probably best left as a memory. It was VERY popular, getting over a million readers a day at its height. This meant that as a huge internet thing there was a really toxic element to the fandom, and the ending kicked up a huge storm of controversy when it was new though it has now been re-evaluated. There was also a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign for Hiveswap, a spinoff adventure game that took five years for just part 1 to come out due to the hired developer absconding with a lot of the money. Since then there have been countless official "fanon" spinoffs and epilogues, so it is easy to lose sight of the fact that at its core there is just a really great story that I would widely recommend in its own right.

It's funny you say that because one of the recent things I decided on regarding this was "man this is so much better read archivally".

This was also something that Hussie spoke about a lot. They are different experiences that are equally valid, which you prefer is ultimately up to taste.

Besides, it's not THAT long. It's about the same word count as the whole Harry Potter series, you wouldn't balk at someone picking those up for the first time.

Homestuck/Harry Potter is a very apt comparison.

Huge young adult series that matured as their target audience did, really only makes total sense if you witnessed the ongoing phenomenon, and went down strange post-canon rabbit holes after somewhat unsatisfying endings.
