This is the thing about Homestuck after the ending (or more specifically after the credits): none of it has ever been put as a part of it on the main site, and while it is officially sanctioned the word "canon" has never been used. Thus Homestuck can easily rest as the complete work ending at the credits, nothing afterwards needs to matter at all. And that's a pretty stonking work.

Can anyone explain this weird mystique around Homestuck to me? Like, why are the reactions in this topic, well, the way they are?

Yes, I'm totally out of the loop.

There are two parts to it:

First Homestuck itself, which you can now find at https://www.homestuck.com. It is kind of a webcomic, but really a massively sprawling multimedia story involving comic panels, gifs, text logs and prose, animations, minigames and more. Also early on it was getting a lot of input in the direction of the story from readers, first via a direct suggestion box, then from posts on the sadly now delet forums. It is a story unlike anything else (and frankly, it's pretty awesome) anywhere really. Also Toby Fox did a lot of the music and basically came up through there.

Then there is the stuff surrounding Honestuck, which is probably best left as a memory. It was VERY popular, getting over a million readers a day at its height. This meant that as a huge internet thing there was a really toxic element to the fandom, and the ending kicked up a huge storm of controversy when it was new though it has now been re-evaluated. There was also a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign for Hiveswap, a spinoff adventure game that took five years for just part 1 to come out due to the hired developer absconding with a lot of the money. Since then there have been countless official "fanon" spinoffs and epilogues, so it is easy to lose sight of the fact that at its core there is just a really great story that I would widely recommend in its own right.
