I think it goes budget they'll admit to + budget overrun they often don't + marketing + cost of running the theaters + residuials to people based on how well it does + a desired profit margin (sorry guys, but the people funding these things want to do better than all costs + 10 bucks).

All we know is they crossed the first threshold, but reports say they need to double the current take to break even after everything is covered.

Thats a pretty good explanation of things that we probably will never have accurate numbers for. One thing I want to add, which I rarely hear anyone bring up, is that the studios supposedly get paid a much bigger percentage of box office revenue the earlier it is in the life cycle of the movies theatrical distribution. Theaters keep the bulk after several weeks, so they depend on multiple viewings. I dont think too many people are watching Birds of Prey more than once, if at all.
