As a male superhero movie fan

I didn't even know what Birds of Prey was until like a week and a half before it came out.

Don't blame a companies totally shit and failure of an ad campaign on male audiences

Sex is bad mmk... Harley Quinn was the better best part of a bad movie. Expecting her solo(not solo) movie to do well because she was what people were talking about was a risk. Also guys don't give a damn about girl power movies. The movie did ok. Not as well as they were hoping, but it's going to be profitable. Also woman purchasing power is bigger than men purchasing power.

Why cant the reason it failed be because its DC and all the marketing centered around a character who, until now, only appeared in DCs worst film?

Seriously though, the film failed because of bad marketing.

If they had highlighted Black Canary, Black Mask, and the fight with the police, it would've been a financial success. Instead, they showed Harley Quinn giving a hyena a bath and made it look like a generic foil villain was the only guy they were going to fight.

It's a good movie. I really liked it. But like everyone else said, the marketing was shit. And because of that so many people will miss a good movie and they will miss out of profits.

Yes, that is the expectation. Similar to Ghostbusters (2016) and the Charlies Angels reboot, if you are male and do not spend money on this product, then there is an implication that you are a misogynist. On second thought, its not much of an implication because some people were straight up claiming this as such.

To quote myself already today: it would have been a decent low budget action flick...but it was a high budget action flick that didn't look good next to something like John Wick (despite the same team involved). The movie looked cheap, ugly, and based off a series that's never really been popular. Then in the aftermath the best people can come up with is "it's fun" without a lot to say why so second week sales don't improve. Taking the "bash the toxic fans" path didn't help before the movie and at this point (after more than a few failures) if you think further shaming will get more men into the seats, you're out of touch with reality. Hell, I have to ask, has that ever worked to turn a failure around?

I'm pretty sure the John Wick people just reshot some of the action scenes. They weren't involved from the start. They got brought in to save it, but they didn't use them in all of it. It's why some of it is good and others ones are meh.

$82 is a pretty low budget for a superhero movie. Hell, Suicide Squad cost twice that much. And BoP already turned a profit.

Did it, though?

Production costs are supposedly near $100 Million, but revenue so far is only about $150 Million. I dont think that covers the marketing. Maybe the download revenue will help it break even eventually.

Should've been a Gotham City Sirens movie since they wanted the focus on Harley. BoP should be able to have their own stuff that actually shows them off, not make them tag along to the Harley show.

Hollywood accounting is funny. I think it goes budget they'll admit to + budget overrun they often don't + marketing + cost of running the theaters + residuials to people based on how well it does + a desired profit margin (sorry guys, but the people funding these things want to do better than all costs + 10 bucks).

All we know is they crossed the first threshold, but reports say they need to double the current take to break even after everything is covered.

Depends on what you watched. I don't know what ads on the CW cost, but it seemed to get a push during Arrow and the rest of those shows (like people that watch arrow need a push to see Black Canary and Huntress in something.

Edit: there's a factor I didn't consider. We already had a better Birds of Prey going on as side characters on TV if we wanted it.

Trying to pin Wonder Woman's success on tight clothing is pretty slimy of him. It was just a well directed movie.
Wonder Woman could've worn full battle armor for the whole movie and it would have been just as great. The sex appeal isn't what drives attendance. Any movie can stick a hot girl on the screen.

Thats a pretty good explanation of things that we probably will never have accurate numbers for. One thing I want to add, which I rarely hear anyone bring up, is that the studios supposedly get paid a much bigger percentage of box office revenue the earlier it is in the life cycle of the movies theatrical distribution. Theaters keep the bulk after several weeks, so they depend on multiple viewings. I dont think too many people are watching Birds of Prey more than once, if at all.
