...genuine people can still want others to like him. You're confusing them with asocial people. (Not to be confused with antisocial people who often want to be disliked.)

Nor is "being nice" to someone a way to get them to like you. In fact, being overly nice can make people dislike you. When it comes to building relationships, shared interests and compatible personalities are generally the way to go. If you want to get somebody to like you, usually the best course is to figure out what they like, do enough research to fake interest in that same subject, and then find a way to "reveal" your interest in the subject without directly acknowledging that you know they're into the same thing. It's usually a more effective trick than merely being a sycophant, although you need to know enough and be okay enough with the activity to actually carry through on feigned interest because if you're going out of your way to get in somebody's good graces, they often have enough people doing the same that they're wise to people merely faking it *or* you'll need to be able to carry through to further build that relationship.

Of course, the fakest way to try to get somebody to like you is to outright lie about your background, but that tactic is a lot more prone to falling apart and can end disastrously. If you get caught substantially lying about your background, there are going to be some serious trust issues with the person.

Otherwise, living in a society generally necessitates being nice (or at least courteous) to people you might dislike. However, it's not so much to get them to like you -- often times you don't want that at all -- but to just get along.
