i remember reading something at the start of all this that was along the lines of if we do this right, people will say we overreacted. if we dont, a shit ton of people will die.

The other problem is that its symptoms are so similar to the flu that many think that they have the flu when it's really Covid-19. After all there's now evidence that Covid was going around in the US in December of 2019, months before the first case in the US was officially diagnosed but the people who had it thought that it was the flu. If that's true, there's no way to know who might've been exposed to it and who wasn't since people can exhibit no symptoms and pass it along to someone who's vulnerable such as those with compromised immune systems (not all of those are elderly either).
