I moved out at 19. I lived at home for my first year of college and that was an absolute nightmare. I had a long commute and not many friends, so I would get home late and just be depressed as hell. I was going to have an 8am class the first semester of my sophomore year, and I knew I couldn't make that work with the commute (I would have to leave my house by 6:30am to even have a chance of getting there on time). So, I moved into a really crappy one bedroom one bathroom apartment in the city.

Honestly, it was fantastic. I finally had freedom from my mom (whom I loved, of course, but she was really smothering at times). The first few weeks, I slept on a blowup bed and ate nothing but turkey sandwiches and fudge rounds while watching cartoons and playing video games.

Once school started back, I lived close enough that I could walk to campus on nice days. I went to tons of on-campus events because it was only a ten minute drive away from my apartment. Made lots of friends, had lots of fun experiences (like playing Blackjack for free condoms), and got tons of free stuff (mostly shirts, cups, and food).

I had the quintessential "broke college student" life, but I liked it. Maybe that's the nostalgia talking because I live a much more cozy, but boring life now...

All in all, I think it was pretty good. Maybe my situation is unique because I moved away from a small, rural town to a (comparatively) big city.
