So this new series probably takes place about 20 years after the original series, long enough for Rin to grow up, get married, have a kid (probably at a fairly young age like 16) and have that kid grow into a young teen. Kohaku is only 3 years older than her, so it probably makes more sense for her to get with him and not Sesshomaru, but Sesshomaru probably stayed around to help them as the "cool uncle" of their family.
