I stopped playing it for a while because of FF7 and other stuff, but got back into it last week and just finished it

The thing is though I thought I finished it fully 10 hours ago, and then the game just kept ending
and ending
and ending some more
and then ending again

This went way beyond even MGS4's ending, and that was at least semi-earned due to 4 games worth of investment in the characters and world and it had more stuff to wrap up.

It basically burned me out on even the vaguest notion of Platinuming it, and that's despite 3/4 days ago building an extensive and highly satisfying zipline-to-road network that stopped perfectly at every delivery location (except 2) that would make completing the orders I need to complete trivial

Honestly I built a zipline network from some waystation up a mountain to the uh...spiritualist? I think? And it connected with the previous network I had built that connected to mountain knot, the doctor, etc. So I sort of came at my network from the other side and closed the loop, and I audibly said "I fucking love this game", it was such a satisfying moment. Some of the detail in the gameplay was really amazing. Some of the ideas and the asynchronous online were amazing. In some ways it's risky/interesting/different and in some ways it's totally tedious garbage. I do like the way that in most 3D open world games, you become stronger and level up to more effectively beat enemies. There's a bit of that here, but mostly you're levelling up your ability to traverse, build stuff, help people, connect, whatever. That's good.

Also, holy shit, princess beach. jesus christ.

I will say this though - I'm playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider next which I'm sure will be like, aggressively fine, but I can basically guarantee I'll put a lot less thought into it than I've put into DS, a game I have no idea what to feel about.

I think this is how people felt when they played MGS2 though? I loved all the shit MGS2 pulled in the final few hours, all the long cutscenes. I totally bought into all of that shit and still do. But a lot of complaints I saw, here included, said it was a good story with bad storytelling, which I just never felt, but maybe DS is guilty of that with its ending. Because I liked some of the stuff in the ending, it's not like I hated the plot or anything, it was just fucking dumped on you repeatedly, unceasingly, interminably. I posted this on the discord but I'm gonna say it here too: I know they're totally different games, but I did find myself thinking about Horizon Zero Dawn when playing it. How they're both post-apocalyptic and the stories both end up laying out the secrets of how the apocalypse happened while creating hope for the future - and how HZD just executes that idea so much better. Maybe an unfair comparison, but still

Whatever, sorry, rambling thoughts. I'm frustrated in a way because I don't feel able to simply dismiss it as a bad game, because it isn't(?), but I also can't call it one of my favourites either.
