There's a misconception being made by this topic.

There are people in this country who view their hometown as "theirs". Theirs to steward, care for, and in a way, theirs to "own". These are the people who hold a view similar to what TC has stated.

The misconception is that everyone shares a similar view. The reality is there are people who don't have that view. Typically, there is some reason for this detachment of "ownership", and it can often come from structural and systemic elements that have put them at a disadvantage.

The people in that protest do not have the feeling of ownership of the City of Minneapolis, because a person like them was murdered by someone who was ostensibly there to protect them.

That says to those people, "this town is not yours". That makes it easier to detach.
