I think that came about in the 90s as "a thing" when they realized that they need some legit way to have something besides kryptonite be a threat. But at the end of the day, he isn't any more or less vulnerable to magic than most other people in the DC universe. The thing is compared to the fact that he's "invulnerable" to so much more, that tends to be when he's out of action that's why.
