I think the people whose lives are at stake should get the final say.

Doctors have a professional responsibility to help their patients make informed choices about their health. Offering a treatment that is not only completely unproven but also carries side effects that may well be substantially worse than the symptoms they're currently experiencing does not help patients make informed choices. It legitimizes an option that has never been legitimate. That would be profoundly irresponsible for any doctor to do.
