If your best effort isn't satisfactory, look for a better method. Sustain your ego with the knowledge that your unsatisfactory best is a most likely worthwhile investment toward finding a more satisfactory future best.
From another perspective, for whatever it is you're giving your best at, you're probably being compensated insufficiently, and thus even if you didn't give your best you'd still be pulling your weight more than well enough. That aside, doing your best is still to your own advantage in that it can improve your performance further, so long as you're not pushing yourself in excess of your recuperative capacity.
