If you were truly exceptional at something, you or others around you would recognize it, and eventually you could realize your full potential.

Odds are that you're a plain ol' mediocre person like the rest of us schmucks. Best to get used to it and not spend too much time pouting over it, or get out there and work your ass off putting in your 10,000 hours into something you hope to master and excel at and be recognized for it

I tend to just make the pressure up if nobody is pressuring me because I have a deeply seated fear of failure.

Sustain your ego with the knowledge that your unsatisfactory best is a most likely worthwhile investment toward finding a more satisfactory future best.

From another perspective, for whatever it is you're giving your best at, you're probably being compensated insufficiently, and thus even if you didn't give your best you'd still be pulling your weight more than well enough. That aside, doing your best is still to your own advantage in that it can improve your performance further, so long as you're not pushing yourself in excess of your recuperative capacity.

Ive only tried my best at something like twice in life. Neither time had mentally healthy results, even if successful in achieving what I wanted.
