Depending on where you live statutory rape might be a strict liability crime. I live in Canada where the AoC is 16, but the court allow the reasonable mistake of age defense for cases like this.

It might be an unpopular opinion, but I think minors who lie about being above legal age should be legally punished as someone who genuinely believe the person is of legal age should not be treated the same as someone who's actively grooming teenagers. The case should be dismissed it the person has proof of the lie. Of course in some circumstances, I don't think "I thought she was 18" should work. Like if a 10 years old lie about being 18, you still deserve jail time.

Also I know it can be a mood killer, but asking for IDs is a better solution than being convicted for statutory rape. Even if charges get taken down, you may still have your face all over the medias and have tons of people share the articles about it.

If you want to be subtle about it. Ask the person to meet in a bar and ask the bartender to ask that person for her(or his) IDs.
