The state GOP hasn't really adjusted towards the center as Virginia's turned more blue; if anything, they've gone even further to the right. Republican voters in Virginia don't want a moderate candidate because they aren't used to needing to moderate their views at all. It's a huge difference from blue states where the GOP has been locked out of power forever.
