I think cancel culture doesnt really exist for people who are already famous - they are basically above consequences after a certain point. Dave Chapelle got cancelled for his transphobic jokes in his one special and hes done like, three new specials since then and hosted SNL multiple times. Louis CK got cancelled and was back to working shows within the year. Basically the only people who have stayed gone are the ones who havent really pushed for a comeback.

As for forgiveness, theres plenty of it when the person being cancelled is genuinely contrite and apologetic. Dan Harmon got cancelled, did an apology on his podcasta damn good apology, basically a masterclass in apologizingand his accuser accepted his apology, public ally forgave him, and his career wasnt affected at all, its as though it never happened.

I would say if there is one problem with cancel culture, its that it really doesnt have any power beyond shaming people, so if youre shameless enough to ignore it or lie through your teeth to deny it there are basically zero consequences. The end result is that the people who really really deserve it dont end up facing any repercussions.
Louis CKs career is a shadow of what is used to be. Hes canceled for all intents and purposes. Even Aziz has been fairly low key since his cancellation.
