A VPN is useful because it encrypts all data coming to and going out from your computer. When you're browsing to a website that uses HTTPS, that HTTPS connection is secure itself. But there's a lot of extra stuff going on that isn't secure in the background in your browser and operating system and other software programs themselves, and that kind of stuff can get intercepted or exploited.
