Okay so they're worth money. But why are they worth money?

supply and demand.

the hobby almost died 20-30 years ago, because the companies printed cards to worthlessness. eventually, they realized the damage and overcompensated. now, instead of having a couple products each season printed well beyond demand, they print a lot of products, but with much much smaller print runs.

that worked pretty well up until maybe two or three years ago. for reasons i'm not sure anyone completely knows, demand shot way way way up. A couple hot baseball rookies started the ball rolling, but Luka and Zion took things several orders of magnitude higher. there has been a ton of new money into the hobby, but the amount of cards being printed every year only goes up by a small percentage. then, the lockdowns and stimulus money pushed it even more. nothing can stay in stock at what used to be reasonable prices.
