all the local walmarts are limiting sales, so it's actually possible to get some. if. if you get in line early enough on friday morning. one of th customer service peeps said their crowd starts lining up hours before the store even opens. i didn't even think to ask until i was home if the stuff is there waiting or if everyone then has to wait even longer for the rep to get there.

People buy basketball cards?

. . . Why?

Not trying to insult, I just didn't know that was a real thing people cared about. I'm guessing just to collect? You can't play a game with them or anything like that, can you?

they are incredibly hot right now. this product from last year is currently selling at 20x msrp. the early sales on this years is starting at 10x msrp.

hobby stores might get a few boxes if they've been buying sports cards for the last decade. that box is currently about 1200 (up from ~400 just a few years ago).

the other sports are all up, too. but the basketball market has gone completely bonkers.

Okay so they're worth money. But why are they worth money?

supply and demand.

the hobby almost died 20-30 years ago, because the companies printed cards to worthlessness. eventually, they realized the damage and overcompensated. now, instead of having a couple products each season printed well beyond demand, they print a lot of products, but with much much smaller print runs.

that worked pretty well up until maybe two or three years ago. for reasons i'm not sure anyone completely knows, demand shot way way way up. A couple hot baseball rookies started the ball rolling, but Luka and Zion took things several orders of magnitude higher. there has been a ton of new money into the hobby, but the amount of cards being printed every year only goes up by a small percentage. then, the lockdowns and stimulus money pushed it even more. nothing can stay in stock at what used to be reasonable prices.

Not trying to hate, just trying to understand. So there is nothing to do with the cards outside of display?
I play and used to collect MTG so those cards validation fluctuating based on play made sense to me. So I'm just trying to figure out if there is any other reason for value here.

there have been a few sports ccgs over the years. i think there's one still going, but without the mlb/mlbpa licenses (so no pics or team names).

but most sports cards are just collectibles at the moment, yeah.
