Samurai typically used katanas. Wakizashis are shorter. There is also a type of katana-like weapon that has a handle that's like twice the normal length even though the blade is about the same. I can't remember what it's called though. They made it in one episode of Forged in Fire.

Edit: misread. Could have been. I haven't seen the last samurai in years
