It may not be as painful as burning, but it can take hours if we're just talking about a cold winter day. And before dying you'd get unbearable frostbite on your extremities. I think people often underestimate how painful that is. But if it's extremely cold, like -20 or in freezing water, it can take only 10 minutes for the shock from hypothermia to set in and end your life.
